Dignified Home Euthanasia

Unfortunately, all of our beloved pets eventually die.  Few are fortunate enough to go peacefully in their sleep.  Many suffer terminal diseases that greatly decrease their quality of life.  Home euthanasia is a medical option (agreed upon by the pet owner and veterinarian) that permanently relinquishes the pain and suffering of a dying pet.  We basically are humanely ending the pet's life to prevent further suffering.  My philosophy is that every pet should be treated respectfully at this time, that they should leave this world comfortable, relaxed, free of anxiety and pain, and surrounded by those that love them.

During a house call for euthanasia, the pet is first given an injection for pain and sedation.  This makes them sleepy and relaxed over 5-10 minutes.  They can be comforted by their family the whole time and can be wherever they like to be (outside, on their bed by the fire, etc.).  A flat, well-lit surface is desirable, and having the pet lying on a towel or bed also helps with moving them afterwards. Nothing is rushed - the length of time needed to say good-bye is variable based on the owner's emotions and the pet's comfort.  When they are comfortable, an intravenous over-dose of an injectable anesthetic agent is administered.  This works very quickly, from seconds - minutes.  Although a difficult decision to make, home euthanasia allows a dignified exit from this world for the pet.  It provides an environment the pet is familiar with and allows the owner to grieve privately.

After the procedure, some elect to perform their own burials (it is up to the owner to check for local codes).  Another option - I can assist with transporting the pet for cremation.  Ashes can be returned to the owner and various urns are available.
